“Before Rev, the in-house team would watch the footage and type it all out in Microsoft Word. It took them about five hours to complete just one hour of raw footage, it was just a really slow process.”
With over 20 million subscribers, Spotify is one of the largest digital content streaming services. Users can choose from millions of songs, along with innovative video and audio content, to enjoy wherever they are. They can listen for free or subscribe to the service for additional features.
As Head of Post Production, Rodney oversees original video and podcast content. Each piece of content produced requires an accurate transcript. To keep pace with Spotifyâs workflow, he must submit the transcripts quickly to production staff for editing.
Left/Right is an Emmy-nominated production company that creates fiction and non-fiction entertainment content for networks like Showtime and Bravo including reality television, documentary programming, and scripted sitcoms.
Given the volume of reality TV and documentary content Left/Right produces, their in-house team has a huge amount of footage that requires transcription. Andi Berman, Left/Right’s Transcription Coordinator, manages the organization and transcription of all footage. She’s responsible for making sure all content is transcribed and searchable. Her work makes it possible for the editorial and production teams to produce a high volume of shows in a short amount of time.
Prior to using Rev, Left/Right used an in-house team to manually transcribe its footage. “Before Rev, the in-house team would watch the footage and type it all out in Microsoft Word,” Andi recalls. “It took them about five hours to complete just one hour of raw footage, it was just a really slow process.” Not only was Andi’s team spending a ton of time manually transcribing footage, but they also had to work around the clock to keep up with all the footage coming in. “We’d have three people transcribing during the day and two people at night.” Andi understood that this inefficient process was slowing Left/Right’s production capacity, so she began looking for a solution.
Left/Right decided to work with a transcription partner so its in-house team could focus on the more creative parts of the production process. Before settling on Rev, Andi tested Trint, an automated speech-to-text transcription service. “We used Trint for a short time,” says Andi. “But the quality of the transcripts wasn’t very good. Our in-house team constantly had to clean them up, which took up quite a bit of time.” Ultimately, the low accuracy of Trint’s automated transcripts slowed down Left/Right’s workflow even more than before. Andi needed a transcription solution that delivered highly accurate transcripts, quickly, and at a competitive price. Rev checked all these boxes.
Rev’s network of 30,000+ human transcriptionists delivers accurate transcripts with turnaround times second to only automated transcription services. In 2018, Left/Right saw an average turnaround of 17 hours for all transcription orders under 60 minutes. “Since we’re a production company, turnaround time is critical because editors and producers always want transcripts back as soon as possible. Rev’s turnaround is a lot faster than we expected, which is great for our workflow!” For Left/Right, partnering with Rev means transcripts are returned quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
Another important consideration for Left/Right was finding a partner who could meet their strict confidentiality standards. “A key part of working with Rev was the ability to sign an NDA. With that in place, we’re able to send Rev our confidential content,” explains Andi. Additionally, Rev’s transcriptionists adhere to strict terms of service and only complete work on a secure platform.
